Chrysanthemum is very popular flower. It is a member of family Compositae (Asteraceae). It has beautiful flowers with various varieties and colours. Flowers bloom in winter season in sub-tropical climate mainly in the month of December and January. The colours of flowers ranges from red, yellow, pink, orange, saffron, blue, violet, maroon, purple and so many other shades.
The plants are perennial i.e. the plants survive for a number of years. Besides its ornamental use, the plant is also used to manufacture a well-known insecticide Pyrethrin.
Due to its popularity among florists and gardeners each year many exhibitions are held in various parts of world. National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) located at Lucknow organises an annual exhibition in the first week of December.
